LOCAL girl Valerie McMillan, on her horse Fonzarelli, has secured a place on the Irish Junior Eventing Squad at the European Championships in Scotland this week.
Fonzarelli is a 12-year-old gelding, bred and produced by Elizabeth McMillan. He has competed in all disciplines at Pony Club and Eventing Ireland. In the early days, he was ridden by Paul and then by Joseph Traynor, who developed the horse’s experience for this level of competition.

Valerie has been riding for many years, and has been a keen member of both the Route Hunt and North Coast Riding Clubs. She has been a team member for the Route Hunt on many occasions, competing successfully in England several times, and this will be a dream come true for her.

The pair were shortlisted after their great result at Tattersalls, Co. Meath, earlier in the year, and following team training, Valerie’s place on the Irish team was secured.

They will travel with other team members this week to Therlestane Castle, Scotland for the three day Eventing European Championships There they will meet other 16-18 year olds from all over Europe competing for gold, silver and bronze medals.

The squad will take part in Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping.
